Use of Hazardous Agents

The use of hazardous agents (radionuclides, biologic agents, and hazardouschemical or drugs) must be listed on your Animal Study Proposals and discussed with the NIH Division of Safety and the Building 6B Facility Manager. It is imperative that the animal care staff receives appropriate and complete training prior to the use of any hazardous material in the facility.

Sharp objects such as needles, syringes, glass pipets, slides, etc., which have not been contaminated with biohazardous materials should be disposed of properly in a red "Sharps Container." Replacing the covers onto used hypodermic needles is not considered an acceptable laboratory practice because of a significant increased risk of needle sticks. Never recap needles before placing them in the red "Sharps Containers."
