Training Courses
NIH Policy Manual 3040-2 (Animal Care and Use in the Intramural Program) specifically requires all individuals authorized to conduct procedures involving animals under ASPs to attend the NIH course Using Animals in Intramural Research. There are actually two different courses:
- All principal investigators are required to complete the NIH course Using Animals in Intramural Research: Guidelines for Principal Investigators, prior to using animals in research.
- All other animal users (i.e., individuals listed on ASPs as authorized to conduct procedures involving animals) must attend the NIH course Using Animals in Intramural Research: Guidelines for Animal Users.
Both courses are offered periodically through the NIH Office of Animal Care and Use (OACU). Call 301-496-5424 for course schedule information and registration. The course Using Animals in Intramural Research: Guidelines for Animal Users can now be taken on-line.
There are additional training requirements for investigators using nonhuman primates. These investigators should be thoroughly familiar with NIH Policy Manual 3044-2 (Protection Of NIH Personnel Who Work With Nonhuman Primates). This Policy Manual requires those individuals who regularly enter nonhuman primate rooms or those individuals having hands-on interaction with nonhuman primates to receive appropriate training. Certification by the first line supervisor that a basic level of performance has been achieved is required. The Facility Veterinarian for the NIHAC Shared Animal Facility periodically presents a training course on proper handling of nonhuman primates.
